There has been little innovation and growth has been driven by debt. Big companies have been able to get bigger by leveraging their size instead of innovating, and the same effect has hindered emerging markets.
This financial crisis will cause suffering for a lot of people.
But it will also shake everything up and start a new era that works a bit differently to the last one.
As the world deleverages over the next few years, financial engineering will be less effective and there will be a window of opportunity for new businesses to grow with innovation and financial discipline.
